Last evening our coven got together for a Samhain dumb supper and ritual. Since the veil between the physical and astral planes is very thin right now, it is an excellent time for spirit contact and divination.

We set up our ancestor altar, filled our plates as well as an offering plate for the ancestors, listened to a short invocation and began to eat in silence. After we finished our supper and began speaking again, all present seemed to agree that the entire circle area was filled with spirit. Some got messages from loved ones, and we shared stories about those we were honoring on our altar. This was an emotional time as we felt our loved ones in spirit draw near.

We moved to the grass area of the circle where our ritual altar was set up, called the quarters and then started the evening divination for the coming year using each of the five elements. Since Samhain is considered to be the Witches’ New Year, we were asking for messages about the year ahead.

For the east/air we used smoke to scry for messages about what new energies may be entering our lives this year. This smokey scrying tool was set up near our east quarter.

In our fiery southern quarter a candle flame was used to scry for messages about where our passions will lie in the year ahead.

In the watery western quarter a cauldron of water was a scrying tool to find out about what would be leaving our lives in the coming year.

In the earthy northern quarter a crystal ball was placed to gaze into for a sense of where we would find our grounding and stability this year.

And, finally, in the center, a blanket was placed with tarot and oracle cards to contact the Lord and Lady in the ether for any special insights or areas to focus on in the year to come.

After our ritual was closed we went indoors and shared all the many insights we had gained through our divination. The growing season is coming to a close for many of us and it is time to turn inward. With all the parties and revelry associated with Halloween, it was nice to set aside this time to grow quiet and listen.

May you receive helpful and bounteous messages from beyond the veil this Samhain to encourage you along your path.

Four of us gathered for our WWW workshop on the use of a pendulum and the tools and methods of scrying. The evening, as expected, turned out to be quite magickal indeed!

We started by creating sacred space and calling in positive energies of protection and guidance before starting our discussion and practice. Creating a sacred space is always a good idea when dealing with energies from other realms and planes of existence. Not only do we want to create a safe space but also to call for guidance in what we are about to undertake. We invited all helpful energies in and told all other energies to leave our space.

We began by stating that each person has their own way of receiving psychic information. We reminded each other that there are psychic senses called “the clairs”.

According to http://www.quantumpossibilities.biz/clairs.htm, they can be described as:

This collective word phrase includes any or all types of psychic sensitivity corresponding to the senses: seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, tasting, touching. Clair Senses in psychic terms are translated:
clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, clairscent, clairtangency, and clairgustance. Additional gifts are clairempathy and channeling.

Clairvoyant (clear vision) — To reach into another vibrational frequency and visually perceive “within the mind’s eye” something existing in that realm. A clairvoyant is one who receives extrasensory impressions, and symbols in the form of “inner sight” or mental images which are perceived without the aid of the physical eyes and beyond the limitations of ordinary time and space. These impressions are more easily perceived in an alpha state and during meditation, though many clairvoyants can obtain visual information regarding the past, present and future in a variety of environments.

Clairaudience (clear audio /hearing) — To perceive sounds or words and extrasensory noise, from sources broadcast from spiritual or ethereal realm, in the form of “inner ear” or mental tone which are perceived without the aid of the physical ear and beyond the limitations of ordinary time and space. These tones and vibrations are more easily perceived in an alpha state and during meditation, though many clairaudients can obtain verbal and sound-related information regarding the past, present and future in a variety of environments. Most Channelers (also known as Mediums) work with both clairvoyance and clairaudience.

Clairsentience (clear sensation or feeling) – To perceive information by a “feeling” within the whole body, without any outer stimuli related to the feeling or information. (Also see clairempathy)

Clairscent (clear smelling) – To smell a fragrance/odor of substance or food which is not in one’s surroundings. These odors are perceived without the aid of the physical nose and beyond the limitations of ordinary time and space.
future in a variety of environments. Most Channelers (also known as Mediums) work with both clairvoyance and clairaudience.

CLAIRSENTIENCEpreviously known by the clairtangent.

Clairgustance (clear tasting) — To taste a substance without putting anything in one’s mouth. It is claimed that those who possess this ability are able to perceive the essence of a substance from the spiritual or ethereal realms through taste.

Clairempathy (clear emotion) – An Empath is a person who can psychically tune in to the emotional experience of a person, place or animal. Clairempathy is a type of telepathy to sense or feel within one’s self, the attitude, emotion or ailment of another person or entity. Empaths tune into the vibrations and “feel” the tones of the aura.

Channel — A person who allows his/her body and mind to be used as a mechanism for etheric world intelligence to bring psychic information or healing energy to others.

Channeling — To allow an etheric world intelligence to enter one’s mind and impress thoughts upon the consciousness to be spoken aloud, using one’s voice or body to deliver the information or healing energy.

It’s important to not compare your abilities at receiving psychic information to others because we are all different and receive this information in our own unique ways.

We took a survey of who had experience with using a pendulum or various scrying tools and found mixed levels of experience in our group. All four of us did own a pendulum and a discussion and practice of pendulum work seemed like a good place to start.

We did a brief meditation, breathing  deeply as we inhaled and slowly exhaled all the tensions of the day. We relaxed our bodies and sent etheric roots through the souls of our feet into the earth to ground ourselves.

Pendulums can be useful for getting a read on whether to cast a certain spell or to varify other information you have received. There are certainly many ways to use a pendulum, but we decided to just cover using one to get a “yes” or “no” answer for this particular workshop, and to revisit the topic at some future date for more pendulum practices.

It is best to attune your pendulum to your own energy. The best way to do that is to cleanse, annoint and practice with it. Incidentally, that goes for all scrying tools as well. To energetically cleanse an object it can be exposed to the five elements of earth, air, fire, water and ether in any combination. Smudging, rinsing in purified water, burying in earth or salt for a time and giving the object energy can be great ways to cleanse it. Annointing or blessing a tool can be accomplished by exposing it to the full moon, applying blessing oil or, an old time witchy favorite, bathing it in a tea made from mugwort. After the cleansing and annointing comes the practicing.

Using your pendulum takes some exploration. You are basically getting messages from your subconscious mind and your “yes” and “no” answers from the pendulum will be unique to you.

Start by holding your pendulum so that it dangles from the end of the chain or cord between your fingers. Many people prefer to hold the chain between the thumb and index finger, but find what is comfortable and what works best for you.

Also figure out which hand works best for you. Some people say dominant and others that the non dominant hand works best. Your goal is to find out what gives you the best results. I write with my right hand but do other things (like high jumping in high school) on my left side. The pendulum works best for me when I hold it in my right hand. Experiment!

The way to determine the “yes” answer is to ask your pendulum out loud something that has “yes” as the obvious answer. If your name is Jane, hold the pendulum, look away and state aloud, “Is my name Jane?”. Pause for a moment and then look at the pendulum and see how it is moving: clockwise, counterclockwise, back and forth, side to side. It may take a few tries but you should get an answer. Relax!

Next, do the same for your “no” answer, noticing the pendulum’s response. If your name is Jane try asking if your name is David. You get the idea. Don’t give up! Pendulums can be very useful tools to an energy worker. I found I had to be standing with my left hand on my hip to get mine to work, so be creative.

We practiced with the pendulums and the newbies promised to continue practicing at home.

At this point we pointed out that all magickal  tools should be kept in their own sacred place such as a bag or a box placed on an altar or other protected spot.

Recording your messages from divination in a journal is a very good habit to form. I need to work on this one since I always seem to be in such a hurry. Note in your journal     things like weather, moon phase and sign and especially the time of year. Around Samhain and Bealtaine the veil is thinner. See if your readings are more accurate at those times and make a note. After practicing with the pendulum we discussed ways to scry. It’s possible to see messages in natural objects like clouds, grassy patches of earth and marble floors. Scrying, as many forms of divination, involves looking at your tool with a softened gaze and relaxing your mind into a meditative state. It is in this altered state that one receives messages through the psychic senses.  We had assembled some of our tools which included various crystal balls,

Bowls of water (and one bowl lined with aluminum foil which produced some amazing results!)

Two magick (black) mirrors. Only one was photographed. And a candle flame.

We took turns rotating around the table and practicing with different tools. I won’t go into all the things we saw and messages we received from these magickal tools, but the evening turned out to be pretty mystical, and our Witchen Witchy Wednesdays seemed to be off to a great start!

We moved our group outdoors to witness the Harvest Moon and give thanks to the Lord and Lady and all who had assisted us.

We even managed to catch an image of the full moon in the water of one of our scrying bowls.

Are you ready to start practicing your scrying and pendulum work?? I plan to make it a regular practice! Our coven is looking forward to our Next Witchen Witchy Wednesday! Until then, brightest witchy blessings,

We are very excited here at the Magickal Cottage to announce that every first Wednesday of the month we will be holding workshops on various magickal witchy topics. We have decided to call the workshops Witchen Witchy Wednesdays.

In many ways these workshops will be like classes in Witchcraft 101. But, as a facilitator, I am realizing that there is always something new to learn about our amazing magickal realm, and what may seem like a review may open one to many new insights. Even though we circle together and train for degrees in our coven, it seems there is never enough time to cover all the questions and subject matter that might concern a new witch. And, even the more seasoned witches often enjoy getting together to learn, practice, discuss and craft. With this need in mind we came up with the idea of gathering for Witchen Witchy Wednesday.

As a follow up to each workshop I will be posting here about each Witchen Witchy Wednesday (WWW for short) and share what we did and what we learned. If you, the reader, would like to follow along and participate in the lessons and practice sessions at home, the WWW posts will appear the second Wednesday of the month, one week after our workshop takes place with our coven at Crow Hollow.

Last evening, October 4th,  was our first Witchen Witchy Wednesday and we covered the topic of Divination Through the Use of a Pendulum and Various Forms of Scrying.  It was an amazing evening and I’m anxious to share what happened with you! Each month we will cover a different witchy topic and we’re excited about the long list of potential subjects we have come up with so far. If all goes well, we may eventually make this a bi-monthly event.

So stay tuned for my post next Wednesday, October 11, about our wonderful  Witchen Witchy Wednesday and learn what we found out about pendulums and scrying. Of course, all of your helpful comments will be welcomed.

Witchy Blessings,

Lady Sarina 🌛🌝🌜

21 August – Monday – Solar Eclipse (Lasts 2 hours and 42 minutes) – New Moon in Leo — Let’s get the basics on the table first, and then you can choose how you want to play this day.  The Sun in Leo trines Uranus in Aries – ease of power – double fire.  The Sun will “carry” this energy with her as she rolls into the eclipse later in the day.  To me, everything carries energy with it (for a short time) from where it has been – that’s the science.  A book carries the dust or crumbs that were on the table, a person who touches someone else carries those skin cells, the moisture from your breath touches another person’s face, etc. – this is one way that many things are connected.  It is also a reminder that all things have their flow pattern (but, that’s another discussion). …

A honey jar is a wonderful magickal tool! It is especially useful for some aspect of your life that you wish to give ongoing energy over a long period of time. The trick to creating this type of spell is to focus on the positive (always a good idea) to sweeten things up and bring about positive change.

To create a honey jar you will need the following supplies:

  • A small jar with some sort of lid. I found this cool honey jar with a cork, but a small canning jar will work just fine.
  • Honey. High quality is good, unfiltered and organic, but don’t break the bank. The sweetness is what’s important.
  • A pencil and a small piece of paper.
  • A small candle of your choosing. I used beeswax but your usual spell candles are ok.

Write on your paper, “Life is sweet because” and finish that statement with what you desire to sweeten in the present tense. Example: “Life is sweet because I am employed in a job that brings me joy and financial prosperity.” Remember to state your desire in the present tense like you have it now. If you say “I will have…” it will always remain in the future. Make sense?

Oh, and need I say it? I would not use a honey jar to bring about baneful magick as in, “Life is so sweet because my ex got struck by lightening”. Ahem….but that’s me.

Fold the petition and place it in the jar.

Pour honey over the paper to completely cover it.

Now drip candle wax to seal around the lid of the jar and add a puddle of wax  to the very top to affix a small candle.

Attach your small spell candle, charge, enchant and light it. Here is a sample charm to say as you light your candle:

Honey from the bee,

Bring sweet blessings to me!

Honey jar work my desire ,

By the power of sweet honey and fire!

So mote it be!

Allow the wax to drip down the sides of the jar to seal your spell. I place the jar on a candle plate or holder to catch the excess wax.

Occasionally add a new candle to the jar to continue to “work” the spell. Use your intuition to tell you when you need to add and burn another candle.

Here’s s humble little honey jar that I have worked for awhile with good results.

This honey jar is that of a coven mate who adds a candle when she feels her energy starting to sag. And it’s “cheaper than therapy”, as they say. You can use a taper candle or tea light. You might even choose the candle according to its color energy. The blue one in the photo above was to bring peaceful energy.

May the venerable honey bee sweeten your life as you work your honey jar magick! 🐝 And please feel free to post your own ideas for casting a honey jar spell in the comments below.

Brightest Blessings,

Plant Familiars

Midsummer greetings from The Magickal Cottage! Our coven celebrated Litha here at Crow Hollow on June 20th, and we made herbal charm bags to capture that intense solar energy for channeling towards our individual purposes. Midsummer is the most magickal of times for harvesting herbs. It’s really quite logical! The longest day of the year will be giving our plant companions a super jolt of solar energy. What better time for an herbal harvest?

This brings me to the topic of personal plant familiars. Most magickals have heard of animal or spirit familiars, but plant familiars? Yes, indeed! If you work with herbal energy or even magickal oils it just might benefit you to consider working with a plant familiar. How do you discover which plants are your familiars? You might begin by considering which plants you are drawn to intuitively.

I know one of my plant familiars is a rose. Roses make my heart sing. They always have, and I have grown hundreds of them. Roses are a great favorite of many people, but, on the other hand, I have seen people rip out entire rose beds to replace them with gravel or cement. This I can’t fathom. But that’s me….

I have other plant familiars besides the rose, but the rose has followed me to every home I have ever lived in. What do I mean by saying that it has followed me? That brings me to another way to find your plant familiar. If you have success growing a certain plant, then it might be your plant familiar. In Texas I at first couldn’t grow the usual hybrid tea roses I had grown in California, but then I discovered antique roses and a whole new world opened to me. So the roses taught me some wonderful lessons during those humid Texas summers.

Back in California I am discovering more wonderful plant familiars. I’m learning that your familiars can change by location and it’s not always dependent on growing conditions. In Texas rudbeckia reseeded itself and thrived all over our property. I had planted just a few plants and they took off, much to my delight. Back in Cali I can’t seem to get those lovely daisy like plants to grow. Other people grow those yellow and orange beauties just fine but not me. However, look what is thriving now:

Shasta daisies sprang up from wild flower seeds and are all over the place! So consider this: my new Shasta daisy familiars have that same solar shape as the rudbeckia but are a luminous white. That’s something worth meditating on! What changes have occurred in my life that are reflected in my plant familiar?

A wonderful California native is familiar to magickals for the purpose of smudging. Salvia apiana, or white sage, grows in the dry canyons near where I live now. Lots of people around here try to grow white sage in their gardens, but it curls up and dies. It’s just a wild child and doesn’t like being told where to live! Lucky for me it has chosen to be my plant buddy.

White sage is all over the place, along with its cousins blue sage, purple sage and black sage. I may never buy another smudge stick!

My most recent adventure into the green world of plant familiars is High John the Conqueror.

This magickal lovely is hard to come by as a garden plant. Cherished by hoodoo practitioners, the root is used a lot like mandrake root. I managed to purchase 5 seeds at a steep price and 2 have sprouted and look happy. They do resemble morning glories which can be invasive. So we shall see what comes of this new relationship. High John may have lots to teach me!

So what does one do with a plant familiar? My first impulse is to explore the meanings and properties of the plant. In sympathetic magick the plant’s shape, scent, color and texture can tell a lot about the plant’s energy. Remember the solar shape of my daisy like friends? Sun energy with its forceful yang quality will definitely play a roll in this plant’s gift to you if you have such a plant totem. Does your plant familiar have round leaves suggesting a lunar energy? Are there mars like spines on your plant suggesting protection? First consider your initial impression of the plant to see what qualities it may lend to your charm bags, candles, incense, etc..

A way to cross check your plant familiar’s energy is to do some research. Witchipedia has some wonderful resources.

The realm of plant familiars is enchanting to explore! You can find tree familiars (think wand making) and commune with the dryads. The flower fairies in your cutting garden will delight and adorn you. And the aromatic properties of your herbal friends will add some powerful aid to your spells and charms.

Enjoy the warm days and store up the energies of our present growing season if you live in the northern hemisphere, for they will serve you well when the days grow darker.

Bright Blessings,
