I have to admit that being a garden witch I love using herbs and their essential oils in all sorts of magickal ways. The essential oils that come from plants are the energy of that plant intensified. Each oil has an energy all its own that can be used in a way that is particular to that individual plant. From cleansing, to protecting, to bringing prosperity and love; there is an oil for whatever you may be needing.

First of all, I would like to emphasize that the oils you use MUST be real essential oils. Man-made fragrance oils will not carry the same energy as the real deal. Essential oils are used in aromatherapy for physical healing and their magickal properties are often similar to their healing properties. Lavender oil is a good example. Lavender oil has antimicrobial properties and on the psychic level it can be cleansing, among other things. See the similarity? Think of antimicrobial soap.

The other thing that bears mentioning is that some people have INTENSE allergic reactions to some oils. I saw a woman go into anaphylactic shock by simply being int he same room with eucalyptus oil! She was an extreme case, but these oils must be handled with care. Wash your hands after touching them.

In my magickal housekeeping I love to use the cleansing oils in a spray bottle with water or in my mopping bucket. Tea tree, lemon oil, lavender, eucalyptus are some favorites that do more than kill germs. They  also remove negative energy as I clean.

Another favorite way to use essential oils in a magickal way is through diffusing the oils in the air. They can have the same cleansing effect as described above, or you can diffuse them for, say, a romantic evening. Patchouli essential oil is great for romance because it causes us to lower our defenses. It is quite seductive, in fact. Shop owners use patchouli to encourage people to spend more money in their stores, because it lowers the defenses that would make one cautious about over-spending.

You can use an oil lamp or burner for this purpose, an electric diffuser or a pot of water boiling on the stove with a few drops of oil added. My favorite way is to use my humidifier dragon I named “Merlin”. I fill his bottom half with water, add my oils and the steam comes out his nose. Love him!!!

And, of course, oils often remind us of candle magick. I usually add oil in some way to my candles, even if it’s to anoint the top of a jar candle before lighting it. anointing pillar candles is an ancient magickal technique. The one I am showing here is to cleanse or remove negativity. Right now is the waning moon, so I wanted to pick a candle spell appropriate to the moon phase. So, here are the steps to anointing a spell candle:

I wanted to add some dried herbs to my candle for cleansing and removing negativity so I ground up some dried lavender buds and yarrow flowers.

With my index finger I added some lemon essential oil to the center of the candle because I want to remove or take away (negativity, that is). If I wanted to drawn something to me I would make my line of oil at the top edge of the candle and spread the oil half way down, just to the middle of the candle. I would then make a line of oil at the base of the candle and spread it towards the middle to meet up with the rest of the oil.

But to remove or take away, with my hand I spread the oil towards the top of the candle. I visualize how I want to cleanse and remove.

Then I add another line of lemon oil to the middle of the candle and spread it with my hand in a downward motion. I think, “Remove negativity!”

Next, I roll the candle in the crushed herbs. You want to press kind of hard to get the herbs to stick.

Recite the cleansing charm or spell of your choice. I always feel it’s more powerful to write your own spells. Set the candle to burn in a safe place. We don’t use our fireplace very often, so I set my candles in there with the screen closed.

If you just want to do a quick charm you can do some tealight magick.

Remove the candle from the holder.

Write your charm on a small piece of paper and fold it three times into a triangle. Insert it into the candle cup and place the candle back in the cup on top of the paper petition.

This charm is to remove obstacles to someone getting a job they applied for. I am working with Ganesha who is the Hindu elephant god that removes obstacles. I anointed the top of the candle with four thieves oil and topped with just a pinch of the dried herbs. Don’t add too many herbs or too much oil or you might start a fire!

Useful info for making your own Magickal oils!

MAGICKWYRD

These oils on their own, unblended, have distinct magical properties. You can use this guide to determine how to mix and match essential oils to create your own hand-blended potion oils with properties that match your needs.

I recommend using about 10-12 drops pure essential oil (not fragrance oils) in a 1oz base oil. The base oil depends on your preference for use. Balance your mix or add a little more/less of any essential oil to create your custom blend when adding the 10-12 drops. To increase potency, add one or more small chips of crystals that correspond to your intent. The same with adding herbs and root powders. Know what you want to successfully build your recipe. Record your recipe, and note your successes when using your recipe. Keep a journal or book of shadows for this purpose.

For anointing  skin: Use a light  bodied oil like Sweet Almond…

kitchen witch

The kitchen is a magickal place! One of the first forms of alchemy was cooking. Think about it: when you prepare a dish you are taking a combination of ingredients and combining them to create something entirely new. That’s what alchemy is. So simply baking a loaf of bread is a magickal act!

I love it when I combine ingredients and see them magickally change before my eyes into something delicious and nourishing. Different foods have different magickal energies and they affect us both physically and energetically when we eat them. It pays to be aware of what you put into your mouth, because you could either be helping or hurting yourself in more ways than you might imagine.

Different foods relate to the different chakra centers in our bodies. For instance, salt, nuts and grains relate to the lower chakras and can be very grounding. Each chakra is associated with a certain color, and the color of a food is often an indication of the chakra center it relates to. The table shows the chakras and their colors, so eating blueberries might help the energy of your third eye chakra.

The following link is to a site with a comprehensive list of the magickal properties of foods: Alchemy Lab. It’s interesting to look up some of your favorite foods and see how they relate to you energetically!

When preparing a meal or whipping up your favorite comfort food, it is a good idea to follow a few witchy procedures to add just the right energy to your cullinery creation. First, light a candle at your kitchen altar. You do have a kitchen altar, don’t you? A kitchen altar doesn’t have to be big or elaborate. Mine is on the window sill over the sink. I have a small lunar tealight holder that I light whenever I am about to cook a meal. Near the candle holder I have placed some small goddess related items and I have a tiny vase where I keep fresh flowers. As I light the tealight, I ask for blessings that all will turn out well, and that positive energy will be added to the food for those who eat it to enjoy.

If you want to, you can get yourself a magickal apron or or special wooden spoon (ie, kitchen wand) and really go all magickal! I found a cast iron pot that I love to cook with. Of course, it’s my cauldron, and people seem to be drawn to it when they visit my kitchen.

When combining your ingredients whether in a bowl or a pot, it’s common procedure to stir in a clockwise or deosil direction. The clockwise direction is the positive, increasing direction, sort of like the waxing moon. Stirring this way you can visualize adding goodness and deliciousness to the recipe. Remember, it’s all about your intention!

I am adding a new page to this blogsite called The Enchanted Kitchen where I will post some of my favorite recipes and their magickal properties. Stop by often to see what I am cooking up!

Blessings,

Sarina
