European Hare

The expression, “mad as a March hare”, describes the crazy springtime behavior that is displayed by many animals and humans alike. The expression has actually been around for hundreds of years and predates the Lewis Carrol book of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland where the Mad Hatter and the March Hare throw a most chaotic tea party.

European hares’ mating season peaks in the month of March and its turns out that if a female hare is being persued by a male she’s not into she will box him and display all kinds of manic behavior. March madness occurs unsurprisingly right around the time of Ostara or the Vernal Equinox.

The full moon of March is called The Worm Moon or The Storm Moon. In 2026 it falls on March 3rd and there will also be a lunar eclipse.

It might be a good time to use the chaotic energy to dance and shout and send out some clearing energy to make way for what you want to manifest during the current growing season.

Or create some “chaos art” and include a sigil to show what you wish to bring in to your life.

Here is a former post I wrote on creating a sigil or symbol:

Alder tree

The Celtic tree Month of Alder begins on March 18. Here is a very interesting article about this sacred fairy tree:

Ostara or the vernal equinox occurs on March 20. In the old Celtic calendar this is actually mid spring (remember how we said that Imbolc marks the beginning of spring?). Its symbols are rabbits, eggs, baby animals and, of course, spring flowers.

Those bulbs we planted last fall should be putting on a show at Ostara. Here are some more correspondences of Ostara:

And to celebrate the equinox, why not bake some yummy treats to share with friends and family?

Last year I was in Germany around this time. I was delighted to see the enchanting custom they have there to celebrate “Ostern”. They hang decorated or colored eggs on bushes to celebrate this time of new life and new beginnings. How very magickal!

Dresden, Germany

And here are some of my painted eggs that I have created over the years. Maybe this year I will create some decorated eggs to hang on a bush. 🩷

May you take some time, wherever you are, to go outdoors and experience that vital energy that is exploding all around us at this joyful time of year! Some of that energy may just be what you need to manifest some joy of your own!

March Blessings,

Sarina
